PLYMOUTH – Twice a year for the past five years the Network of Open Space Friends, working closely with Patrick Farah at Town Hall, has organized a town-wide trash cleanup across town.
It was supposed to be held more than a week ago, on Nov. 1, but strong winds and heavy rains caused many of the groups that were planning to participate to delay their efforts for a week.
This past Saturday, Nov. 8, there was a clear hint of winter in the air and it was dry, so hundreds of volunteers put on their yellow vests, grabbed purple bags and headed out.
The Wendelyn Childers Real Estate team worked in the Indian Brook area of Manomet. The Plymouth Lodge of Masons worked on South Meadow Road, and a crew from Plymouth 400 picked up litter from around Forefather’s Monument.
A group led by the Goldenrod Foundation cleaned along Long Beach, while Scouts took on the Hedges Pond Recreation Area and Nelson Beach.
The Tidmarsh Farms Living Observatory worked the Fresh Pond Connector and Bartlett Road, while Friends groups representing Town Brook, The Pinehills, Center Hill Preserve and Burial Hill were all out in force.
There were many other groups and individuals participating and the final results aren’t in yet, but once again the community has come together to try and staunch what seems a never-ending flow of trash.
